Fortress of the Alhambra
David Roberts, 1796–1864; born Stockbridge, Scotland; died London, UK
x1970-129
Roberts had been a set designer for the London stage when he abandoned the theater in 1830 to paint topographical views of architectural monuments. Portfolios depicting picturesque views of architectural sites throughout Europe and the Near East were popular with Victorian armchair travelers, and Roberts regularly contributed drawings made on location to such enterprises. This theatrical view of the fourteenth-century Moorish fortress of Alhambra was published as a lithograph in his portfolio Sketches of Spain in 1837.
