View of the Town and Castle of Hardinxveld

Aelbert Cuyp, Dutch, 1620–1691
x1984-332
Unlike Rembrandt’s Landscape with Thatched Cottage, an amalgam of locations around Amsterdam, Cuyp’s drawing depicts a specific place: the small town of Har dinxveld, located on the river Merwede not far from Cuyp’s hometown of Dordrecht. Drawing from life was an important part of Cuyp’s process. He used rapid sketches, such as this one, as studies for oil paintings or for finished, autonomous drawings. Cuyp’s popularity as a painter rested in part on his ability to convey a sense of serenity and stability through landscape.
