Leonora Carrington, 1917–2011; born Clayton Green, UK; died Mexico City, Mexico
2001-54
Carrington developed an array of personal imagery featuring fantastical figures who often appear in complementary pairs that symbolize balance between opposing natural and supernatural forces. Interrelated couples are a recurring theme in her work, one that was echoed in the collaborative artistic partnerships she developed following her move to Mexico City in 1943. In Mexico she became part of a vibrant avant-garde that included many artists who had likewise fled the violence of World War II, among them her two closest collaborators, Kati Horna and Remedios Varo, whose work is also on view in this gallery.
