Stool for an Èṣù priest or priestess (ìjókò Èṣù)

Yorùbá artist
2003-24
This stool depicting the Yoruba deity Esu consists of stacked sculptural elements symbolizing his role as messenger to the gods and bearer of sacrifices to gods and spirits. Esu, the center figure, wears the elongated headdress commonly found on representations of the deity, while two other Esu figures—one on his right and the other on his left—play flutes, referring to his role as a communicator. Above Esu, another figure holds an offering bowl and a sacrificed, headless rooster—with Esu’s aid, individual sacrifices reach the gods. For those who do not appease the deity through offerings, Esu becomes a mischievous trickster who can reverse fortunes and bring disorder to the world. Once owned by an Esu priest or priestess, this stool served as a seat during religious rituals and stood on a shrine as a focus of devotion. It retains its patina from ritually applied alcohol, organic material, and animal sacrifices.
