Interior of a Church, plate 70 from Liber Studiorum, part XIV,

1819

Joseph Mallord William Turner, English, 1775–1851
x1937-648
While many of the Liber Studiorum prints were done by professional engravers under Turner’s supervision, others, such as this example, were made entirely by Turner himself. To establish the composition (based on a painting from the late 1790s), he made a brown wash drawing and then etched the outlines onto a copper plate. For the gothic church’s atmospheric interior, he used mezzotint to evoke the play of light and shadow. The letter A in the upper margin indicates Turner’s category of “Architectural landscape.”
