King Rameses II,

ca. 1881

Attributed to Emil Brugsch, French, 1842–1930
2008-318
In 1881, having been appointed general director of excavations and antiquities by the Egyptian government, Gaston Maspero led an investigation into how several Egyptian artifacts had appeared on the black market. Shortly after Brugsch joined the inquiry in early July of that year, local looters confessed to finding a cache of royal mummies. Among the artifacts Brugsch and Maspero found in the tomb were remains of rulers from ancient dynasties dating from 1539 to 1190 B.C., including King Rameses II. Two days later, the contents of the tomb were sent by boat to Cairo, where the mummified remains of Rameses II were carefully unwrapped and photographed by Brugsch, before being put on display.
