Group of Six Wild Horses,

1534

Hans Baldung, German, 1484/5–1545
x1990-34
Considered the most gifted and original of Albrecht Dürer’s students, Baldung excelled as a woodcut artist, perfecting a raw and vigorous line that he employed for his highly personal imagery, such as these two enigmatic scenes of wild horses in a dense forest. While Baldung depicts horses as noble steeds elsewhere, here they manifest insatiable sexuality—a trait shared with witches, another subject that appealed to the artist’s obsession with the demonic forces of nature. Baldung’s robust graphic style enhances the feeling of violent motion suggested by these possessed horses, their massive forms conveyed by strong parallel modeling lines.
