Untitled,

1963

Lee Bontecou, 1931–2022; born Providence, RI; died Florida; active Orbisonia, PA and New York, NY
x1964-39
Dark voids and hypnotic, illusionistic recesses are the hallmarks of Bontecou’s oeuvre. In this untitled drawing on a circular canvas, an oculus with a shadowy center is bisected by a series of three smaller voids. Like much of her early work, Untitled was produced with graphite as well as with an acetylene torch that "drew" with soot, which the artist then manipulated through erasure and scraping, resulting in a work that is at once industrial and handmade. Donald Judd championed the elusiveness of Bontecou’s imagery, insisting her pieces functioned as an assertion of herself, what she feels and knows.” At once corporeal and mechanical, these forms suggest spinning propellers, speeding planes, and the cosmos.
