Ritual vessel (pou)

Chinese
Shang dynasty, Anyang period, 13th - 11th century B.C., 1299 - 1000 BCE
y1968-110
This vessel features a decorative program of ram heads; this depiction of animals from real life, rather than from the imagination, distinguishes it as a product from southern China. While the piece-mold cast vessel seems pristine upon first glance, a quarter of its exterior has been stripped, exposing a corroded surface and craters previously hidden by extensive restoration work.
