Alice Neel, 1900–1984; born Merion Square, PA; died New York, NY
Person depicted: William C. Seitz, American, 1914–1974
y1977-8
Neel is celebrated for her expressionistic, psychologically charged portraits that convey a sense of interiority and the personalities of her sitters. She painted this portrait of then curator at the Museum of Modern Art William Seitz as part of a series focused on art‐world luminaries. Seitz began his career at Princeton; he was the first person to receive a PhD from Princeton focusing on contemporary art. Following graduation, he was appointed assistant professor in art history. Works given in honor of Seitz form an important cornerstone of the Museum’s modern collections. Neel’s portrait of Seitz’s wife, Irma, painted in the same year as this portrait, is on the other side of the doorway.
