Storage jar (hu),

1st century B.C.

Chinese
Western Han dynasty, 206 BCE–9 CE
y1986-111 a-b
This covered jar, likely an item placed in a tomb, attests to the survival of earlier decorative forms that continued to be widely used in the Western Han dynasty. The painted designs include elongated cloud scrolls that recall running spirals painted on Neolithic vessels nearly three thousand years ago in northwestern China. The two animal-face handles evoke the captivating large-eyed animal mask motifs found on bronze vessels.
