Angel,

late 17th century

attributed to Jean Regnaud (Giovanni Rinaldi), French, active in Italy, 1668–1672
2007-67
Giovanni Rinaldi was the Italianized name given to the French sculptor Jean Regnaud during his stay in Italy (1668–72). Rinaldi collaborated with Gianlorenzo Bernini, executing stucco angels in Sant’Andrea al Quirinale and gilt bronze figures on the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of the Basilica of Saint Peter’s after Bernini’s design. This angel, attributed to Regnaud on stylistic grounds, may have originally been on a reliquary, holding an instrument of the Passion, probably the nails. It could be based on a drawing by Bernini or may instead demonstrate the degree to which the master’s collaborators assimilated his style.
