Gabriele Münter, 1877–1962; born Berlin, Germany; died Murnau (am Staffelsee), Germany
2012-22
With the declaration of war in 1914, Münter left Munich for neutral Sweden, while her lover Wassily Kandinsky went to his native Russia. In Scandinavia, she arranged exhibitions for Kandinsky and herself. Kandinsky joined her during these exhibitions, which lasted from December 1915 until March 1916, but then broke off relations with her. Münter continued to paint cityscapes and landscapes in Scandinavia, now with people included. This scene shows characteristics of children’s drawings, one of her interests, and is less bold than her earlier, expressionistic creations. After her return to Germany, Münter stopped painting altogether for some years in the 1920s, until, encouraged by her new companion, Johannes Eichner, she began to paint in a new style.
